Quando crianças, Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley) e Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys) se amavam. Adultos, se reencontram em Londres, durante a 2ª Guerra Mundial. Ela é cantora e ele escreve filmes de propaganda para o governo. Apesar de ainda se amarem, Thomas está casado com a bela Caitlin Macnamara (Sienna Miller), com quem, surpreendentemente, Vera desenvolve uma grande amizade. O triângulo é acrescido de William Killick (Cillian Murphy), oficial que conquista a cantora e se casa com ela. Quando este é obrigado a servir na guerra, Vera fica sozinha com Dylan e Caitlin, e a batalha entre o que pensa e o que sente torna-se mais intensa.
